Lake Garda in northern Italy is one of the country?s and Crystal Summer?s top tourist destinations. The town of Gardone Riviera, on the western shoreline of Lake Garda, is famed for its natural beauty and authentic atmosphere. Less commercialised than many Lake Garda towns, Gardone Riviera?s pedestrianised town centre sits around a pretty tree lined harbour. Colourful sub-tropical plants flourish around the cobbled streets which house elegant shops and inviting caf?s. Just out of the town centre, set in to the hillside, is the Vittoriale degli Italiani villa. Originally home to the famous poet Gabrielle D?Annunzio, the villa is now open to the public. As well as a museum, the grounds also include extensive gardens filled with statues and tropical plants, as well as an entire World War battleship and amphitheatre.
The Vittoriale degli Italiani villa hosts the annual Vittoriale Music Festival, this year running from 1 July ? 12 August 2012. The festival brings together international artists performing plays, operettas, classical music and ballet. Huge names such as the New York City Ballet Company, Patti Smith and the Buena Vista Social Club will be among those performing this year. Performances take place in an open-air theatre with views of Lake Garda?s beautiful countryside. The theatre, designed by architect Gian Carlo Maroni, is the largest in the Lake Garda area, seating 1,500 people. Performances continue over the next couple of weeks, with tickets still available.
