1 - Speak Spanish fluently and know their grammar (because some grammar changes a bit depending where you are). Lose the camera too.

2 - It's on the Mediterranean Sea, and it's got a long history.

3 - Because it's got a lot of history, there will be lots to do there. Visit the cathedral, stuff like that.

It's almost impossible to not look like a tourist in Barcelona. The Spanish men will flirt with you and you will be spotted easily as a tourist. When traveling watch out for your money or wallet. They have some pretty good con men. Try to be in pairs when traveling that town, it's a real party town. Stay out of the Barrio at night time. For a side trip take an overnight ferry from Barcelona to the Spanish island of Ibiza. Now that would be worth it. The biggest dance party in the world. Barcelona has great food, sights, and the famous Flamingo dancers.

Barcelona is a very cosmopolitan city, there's a lot of tourists and it doesn't matter, be yourself. I'm going to Barcelona next week and I'm very excited. Be careful with romanians begging for money, they can stole you the wallet or your mobile phone in a second but don't be scared, they're not aggressive. Enjoy the city, visit the Parc Well, La casa Batlló, etc. Have fun!!
Greetings from Ibiza!
Edit:
Bobe don't stereotype! there's no famous flamingo dancers in Barcelona!!!Flamingo is a tipical dance in the south of Spain not in Barcelona! And we don't go crazy over blonds, because we have blond people too!!! I think you're one of those who think that in Spain we're always sleeping siesta, dancing flamenco and saying olé olé! I'm tired of people like u!!

1. Barcelona can be crowed with tourist and been one of them is not a problem. Nevertheless as any other travel put your wallet in a secure place and don't shown to much the fancy electronic devices, cameras, etc. Barcelona is in general a safe city especially if your are walking with other people.

2. Barcelona is the capital of Catalunya probably the richer province in Spain. The city is very cosmopolitan with an European feeling all around. The city is famous for the good eating, night life, urban planning and modernist architecture. The works of Gaudi are some of the most famous landmarks of the city especially La Sagrada Famila, Parque Guell, Casa Mila (la Pedrera ) and Casa Battlo. Barcelona was the home for the 1992 Olympic Games and the city receive a billionaire injection for the reconstruction of the water front and the construction of the Olympic City in Montduic.

3. If you are planning to go for the first time take the touristic buses in front of El Corte Ingles in Plaza Catalunya. The red and blue lines are the best way to see the major attractions.

If you are arriving by plane the airport train is a good option to reach the center of the city.
