The city of Madrid is located at almost the exact geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula, at a latitude of 40 degrees 25 minutes north, 3 degrees 42 minutes west. It will come as a surprise to many of our readers to learn that Madrid is situated further west than London, Liverpool or Edinburgh.

Built on a series of small mounts, between which Madrid's rather inadequate River Manzanares flows, the city's average altitude is 654 metres above sea level, its highest point being 694 metres. At a height of 655 metres, the average barometric pressure is 706.7 mm.
According to official census data from the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), the population of Madrid (within municipal boundaries) was 3,187,062 on 1st January 2007. It may also surprise some readers to know that this makes Madrid the 3rd largest city by population in the European Union, after London and Berlin, if population within the city limits is the determining factor.

Zoom in (if not already) and you will see there was no large bodies of water around, and it was near "Tagus" river.

You could figure this out much more quickly by simply opening a map of the country.

Madrid is pretty much in the dead center of the Iberian Peninsula. By design. It was CHOSEN to be the capital for that reason.

Exactly, not a long time ago Madrid was not bigger than a little VILLAGE at the southern border of the Central Mountain Range,
but in the 17th century it was CHOSEN by the king Felipe II as the capitol city of Spain for being in the centre of the peninsula ( in that times Portugal belonged to the king of Spain ). Now, it is one of the biggest Europeancitiess!
(before that it was the city of Valladolid, and previously there hadn't been a capitol)

So it is in a plane near that mountains, in the region called New Castilla ( Castilla la Nueva ), but it isnowadayss a different Autonomous Community (like a state) ( Comunidad de Madrid ).

It was near a little river, the Manzanares River, wich is drynowadayss, and there are SEVEN underground water channel which collect water from the surrounding mountains and transport them to the city.
The first one was built, I think, in the 19th century, in times of the queen Isabel II.
